Welcome to the Animal Control Division of the Grass Valley Police Department.  We are proud to provide service to the residents who reside in the city limits of Grass Valley and Nevada City. “The mission of the Animal Control Division of the Grass Valley Police Department is to provide quality services to the citizens of Grass Valley and Nevada City by providing protection for themselves and their property from the dangers and nuisances caused by stray animals, to protect pets from the cruelty they may face from irresponsible citizens, and to educate the public in the responsibilities of humane pet ownership, animal control, care, and welfare.”

About Animal Control

The Animal Control Division provides the cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City with the following services: pickup of stray, injured or dead animals; quarantine of biting animals, and investigation of animal bites, animals at large, and animal disturbance complaints. We also operate the Grass Valley/Nevada City Animal Shelter, handling animal adoptions, selling dog licenses for Grass Valley city residents, and answering questions from callers and visitors.

Note: The animal shelter may be closed at any time for an animal emergency.

Field services are available Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm.

Policies & Procedures

When an animal is impounded and the owner is known, the animal will be held for a minimum of five (5) days. Owners will be contacted by telephone or mail during the period so they may claim their animal. Unclaimed animals will either be offered for adoption.
